Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is considered as one of the graduate degree course in order to practice Ayurvedic medicine.The basic eligibility criterion set for candidates who wants to pursue the BAMS course is to clear the 10+2 level of examination with a minimum percentage in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Candidates are selected to the BAMS Course on the basis of the marks secured in the entrance examination.

  1. Ayurvedic Colleges in West Bengal JB Roy State Ayurved College & Hospital, Calcutta – One of the oldest colleges in India to offer BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery) course was established in 1916. It functions in collaboration with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Calcutta. Admission is on the basis of an entrance examination that is conducted by the college. The eligibility criterion to sit for the entrance examination is to pass 10+2 level of examination with  50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The forms are distributed from the college premises generally in the month of June. The duration of the course is 5 ½ years.
  2. Institute of PG Ayurved Education & Research, Calcutta – Affiliate to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkatta and established in 1976, this college provides both Undergraduate and Post –Graduate courses in Ayurvedic Medicine. Induction to this college is through an entrance test conducted by the college for interested candidates who have cleared the 10+2 level of examination with 50% marks. Research work is also being conducted in this college for students interested in pursuing higher studies.
  3. Belley Sankerpur Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Ayurved College & Hospital, West Bengal- RGMACH as it is popularly known was established in 1994, is a private college affiliated with West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata. Every year forms are distributed in the month of May-June and the entrance test is conducted thereafter. Classes start from the month of August. The eligibility a criterion is that candidates need to clear 10+2 level of examination with a minimum of 50% marks.

How to enroll in an Ayurvedic Medical College?

The government of India has decided that starting next year, admission to various courses in Ayurveda will be conducted through the National Eligibility – cum- Entrance- Test (NEET) from the academic year 2018-19. The colleges so far have been holding their own private examination to admit students in the courses that they offer will not be able to do so from next year. The government has also instructed the Medical Council of India to reframe the curricula in order to incorporate Ayurvedic Medicine.

The increasing demand for Ayurvedic doctors across pharmaceutical companies and government hospitals is due to the trust developed by the alternative medicine as the best method to cure diseases. In 2003, the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy ( AYUSH )  was established by Government of India to support and promote research and education in the field of Ayurvedic Science.
