Diploma in Engineering is a course which covers basic engineering concepts. This course focuses more on practical and skill – oriented training. Its fundamental aim is to provide students with the job-related knowledge, know-how, mathematical and analysis techniques along with the ability to apply problem-solving techniques. The professional course has been so planned that students undergoing these courses can still pursue jobs in the field of engineering. Many students after their Class X exam instead of taking up science in +2 level/higher – secondary enroll in an engineering diploma program. The reason behind this strategy is that once they earn their diploma in engineering, they can easily transfer into the second year of a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) or B.E (Bachelor of Engineering) course.
In order for students to choose which branch of engineering to follow they can easily select from the following table as mentioned in the JEE 2011 stipulations:
|Column A||Column B|
|If a student has Diploma in Engineering in the following discipline:||The student is eligible to be admitted into:|
|Civil Engineering/Rural Technology /Biomedical Engineering||Civil Engineering/Environmental Engineering|
|Mechanical Engineering||Mechanical Engineering/Manufacturing Science and Engineering/ Bio-Medical Engineering|
|Automobile Engineering||Mechanical Engineering/Automobile Engineering/Bio-Medical Engineering|
|Electrical Engineering||Electrical Engineering/Electrical & Electronics Engineering / Bio-Medical Engineering|
|Mining Engineering||Mining Engineering|
|Chemical Engineering||Chemical Engineering/Ceramic Engineering|
(The above table highlights only certain branches of engineering.)

Pattern of Courses offered in Diploma of Engineering
Diploma in Engineering courses is generally for a period of three years.Some courses are of four-year duration where three years are for study and one year for industrial internship.The minimum qualification required to enroll in a diploma in engineering course is passing the tenth standard examination with a minimum of 35% in Maths and Science subjects.
A student, however, can get a direct entry into a B.Tech and B.E program directly into the second year under the lateral entry scheme. If a student is able to clear the LET( Lateral Entry Test) he can directly enter a B.E/B.Tech course.
