Engineering is a term which has been referred to a profession in which the knowledge of sciences both mathematical and natural is obtained by study, experience and practice. Engineers are people who are known to find a scientific solution to an existing problem. Students who have gained a professional qualification in engineering are well versed in applying the theories of mathematics and science to research and develop economical solutions to technical problems. They work as a bridge between technical applications and social needs. Engineering plays an important role in ensuring the growth and development of a country’s economy as well as in improving the quality of life for citizens within the country. Its orbit is far wider than just buildings and bridges, spanning improvements in renewable energy technologies and solutions through to global health challenges. As such, there is an important link between a country’s engineering capacity and its economic development.
Development of a nation begins with the ability of a country to provide amenities like good education, infrastructure, proper medical care and other basic social services. One of the fastest growing state economies in India is that of Odisha. The Odisha Economic Survey of 2016-2017 published a report that points out that the GSDP has registered a growth of 7.94% as against the national average of 7.1%. Specific Aspects of Development in which Engineers Play a Vital Role
The key aspects in which the role of an engineer is directly related to the growth and development of Odisha are:
a) Engineering in the educational growth of Odisha – Engineering Colleges play an important role in preparing undergraduates by giving them educational exposure to the different fields of engineering to impact their knowledge and overall experience. The Odisha government has also taken steps towards setting up of the Odisha Council for Higher Education to monitor the functioning of colleges in the state. The first IIT Bhubaneshwar has also been established to provide engineering students of the state an added leverage. The specific needs of entrepreneurial skills are also inculcated in them for sustainable development for the growth of the state.
b) Engineering in the community development of Odisha – Engineering deals with the development and creation of an environment for infrastructural growth. Engineering plays a vital role in providing facilities for living, industry, and transportation, including large buildings, roads, bridges, canals, railroad lines, airports, water-supply systems, dams, irrigation, harbors, docks, aqueducts, tunnels, and other engineered constructions within the state of Odisha.
c) Incorporation of engineering companies in Odisha – The coming together of engineering minds go a long way in fostering all round industrial developments which in turn leads to an economic turnover. The Odisha government has also made laws to promote industrial development in the state. Engineering minds contribute to attracting and creating important developmental projects and leads the state into a realm of higher productivity. The formulations of the IPR 2015 has been done with a vision to make Odisha, the first choice for investors along with the creation of new employment opportunities to foster all round development.
Odisha, the state of the future wants to ride on the shoulders of engineering graduates to enable an environment for all round development.
