Alzheimer’s Disease and Covid 19

Alzheimer’s Disease  is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disease of the elderly and  is the most common form of dementia, which  destroy  memory  and other normal brain functions.

It  is that stage of neurologic disorder that causes the brain to  shrink and brain cells to die resulting into  a continuous decline in thinking, behaviuoral and social skill power that affects a person’s ability to think and function in normal way.

COVID-19 , the deadliest pandemic mankind has ever faced,   poses a serious threat to older people with Alzheimer’s disease  .Various studies show COVID-19 may heighten the risk of developing Alzheimer’s, and can cause an increase in blood-based molecular biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease.

The first report on the neurological manifestations of COVID-19 showed that “impaired consciousness,” including reduced consciousness level or delirium occurred more frequently among severe COVID-19 patients (13/88, 14.8%) compared to those with less severe disease (3/126, 2.4%).

In another study, 1 in 10 patients have been reporting memory problems after mild cases of COVID-19 which did not require hospitalization, even 8 months after disease.

Recent data also suggest that  people with dementia are more likely to be associated with an increased risk of having severe COVID-19 and mortality associated with it.

On the other side of the table , the related public health interventions (e.g., physical distancing or lockdown) have major adverse impacts upon the well-being and the care of older people suffering from Alzheimer’s, as  the care givers are compelled to maintain physical distance from the  patients who needs close physical contacts and monitoring  for conducting  their daily activities .

Ayurvedic medicinal plant  Brahmi-   improves memory score

Ayurvedic herbal medications are increasingly researched due to their biosafety profile and  are gaining widespread acclaim globally.

Medical researches shows Brahmi ( Bacopa monnieri )an ancient ayurvedic medicinal herb,  improves the total memory score . With regards to improvement of memory function, its effect is more on decreasing the forgetfulness rather than increasing learning. In a study on geriatric patients with onset of Alzheimer, Brahmi was found to have induced significant improvements in orientation of time, place, person and attention component amongst the patients.
