JEE Results 2017 and Odisha

Choosing engineering as a career is a dream of thousands of students. The all India common entrance test conducted for entrance to various engineering colleges across the country is popularly known as the Joint Entrance Examination(JEE).The test which is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) comprises of two stages- JEE Main and the JEE Advanced. Only those students selected in JEE Mains are eligible to sit for JEE Advanced. Students from all over the country take this examination.

The year 2017 witnessed a marvelous performance by the students from Odisha. Although the exact numbers are yet to be pinpointed, the number of students who had qualified from Odisha has crossed the 300 mark. The total number of students who had appeared for the examination from the state of Odisha hover around 45,000. The examination was conducted across the state of Odisha in 82 centers in six cities namely Cuttack, Balasore, Sambalpore, Rourkela, Behrampur, and Bhubaneswar. The total number of students who were able to clear the JEE Advanced examination is 2700, which is only about 6%. The cut-off marks required to qualify for JEE Advanced 2017 was 81 for General students, 49 for OBC, 31 for SC and 27 for ST students.

As the results of the JEE Advanced was published nationally, Swastik Sahu, of Mother’s Public School, Bhubaneswar, with an All India Rank(AIR) of 382 became the topper from the State of Odisha. Some stories that need to be mentioned is that of Bikash Das from Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district. The son of a daily wager from a small village was successful in clearing the much coveted JEE Advanced 2017.He has secured 582 ranks in the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. Bikash Das, who belongs to a family that comes below the poverty line, is now eligible for a seat in the much-coveted engineering colleges in the country.

Best Engineering Colleges in Odisha

The announcements of the results are a harbinger of the admission process. IIT Bhubaneswar and NIT Rourkela are considered the best colleges to pursue engineering in Odisha.

IIT Bhubaneswar – Established by the government of India in the year 2008, under the mentorship of IIT Kharagpur, is considered as the top most engineering college in Odisha.IIT Bhubaneswar is one of the first IITs to set up a separate marine campus where research on the causes behind rising sea level, disaster management, fishery development etc. The campus of IIT Bhubaneswar is situated in Samantapuri, Satyanagar in Bhubaneswar. National Institute of Technology, Rourkela –  Formerly known as the Regional Engineering College Rourkela, this college has been recognized as an institute of national importance by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.This engineering college was established in 1961 and is one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country. It is well –known for the courses that it offers in Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering and Computer Science. Situated in the steel city of Rourkela, this college has always ranked in the premier colleges as far as placement is concerned.

The Odisha Joint Entrance Examination is also about to declare its result and readying its counseling process.
