BRAHMI ,the medicinal herb for Enhancing Memory

Brahmi  (Bacopa monnieri) is a creeper plant that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine  for its high  medicinal values.  The latest medical research corroborates Ayurveda’s claim that Brahmi is a  brain-rejuvenating plant which has valuable alkaloids and other elements that can stimulate certain chemicals in brain which impart a cooling energy and can act as a memory enhancer.

Beneficial For Dementia

Latest study of World Health Organisation(WHO) reveals nearly  50 million of global population suffers from Dementia-a syndrome in which there is deterioration in memory, thought process, behavioural pattern  and the ability to perform normal regular activities. There are nearly 10 million new cases every year and the number is increasing at an alarming rate. (Ref.1).

Brahmi has been commonly used in Ayurvedic medicines to enhance the power of the brain. Some of the organic compounds in brahmi stimulate cognitive pathways in the brain to enhance the cognitive ability of humans , according to a study by Devendra, Patel Saurabh Shankar et al., 2018 (Journal of Pharmacognosy and Photochemistry). The leaves of the Brahmi plant are also known to reduce stress and anxiety in humans.

Medical Research on Impact of Brahmi on Dementia

Medical researches   establish  Ayurveda’s claim that Brahmi is a  brain-rejuvenating plant and has the ability to protect brain cells from chemicals involved in Alzheimer disease ,the most common form of dementia.

Research studies suggest  that

  1. Brahmi has significant memory-enhancing properties due to the presence of bacoside A, a bio-chemical which helps in re-building damaged brain tissues(Ref.2).
  2. It improves acquisition, retention and retrieval of learned tasks ( 3,4)
  3. In a study on geriatric patients with onset of Alzheimer, Brahmi was found to have induced significant improvements in orientation of time, place, person and attention component amongst the patients. Language component in terms of reading, writing and comprehension also showed marked improvement. (5)
