Brahmi – A Brain-Boosting Herb
The development of the human brain is a long drawn process that starts inside the mother’s womb and continues arguably throughout the lifespan. Brain development in humans is a complex series of dynamic and adaptive processes that lasts throughout the entire course of development. The brain is a complicated circuit that can perform various tasks simultaneously and with great efficiency. Ayurveda mentions that the brain performance is largely depended on three things: a) Dhi- Learning and comprehension, b)Dhriti- processing and retention of knowledge, and c) Smriti – the power to recall or remember. Ayurveda mentions a group of ‘Medhya Herbs’ which are known to enhance brain capacity. Some of these herbs are Shankapushpi, Ashwagandha, and Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri). The most important herb in this group is Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) which has been used as a memory enhancer in Ayurvedic medicine for almost more than 3000 years. The flagship product from the house of Branolia Chemical Works,‘Branolia’ uses the power of Brahmi since 1922 to boost brain functioning.
Brahmi or Bacopa Monneeri which is well-known for its role as a Medha Rasayana in Ayurveda is a creeper with succulent leaves found naturally in the wetlands of eastern and southern India. Medicinally the entire plant has been utilized in treating various disorders in the human body, especially those related to memory loss, anxiety, intellect, and overall brain functioning for ages. The key element present in Brahmi, Bacosides, is primarily responsible for augmenting the efficiency of transmitting signals to the various nerve fibers which in turn enhances memory and cognition. Brahmi is also one of the important elements present in nature that helps in brain repair as it is rich in antioxidants, is anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant. It is known to revitalize the brain cells by removing toxins and blockages within the nervous system while having a nurturing effect. It can also help in balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Brahmi is extensively used to fight neurological disorders. Neurological disorders are mainly caused by free radicals present in our body. The antioxidant property present in Brahmi helps fight these free radicals and in turn, reduces the risk of neurological disorders.
