PARALYMPIC- A brief introduction

The word “Paralympic” derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or alongside) and the word    “Olympic”. Its meaning is that Paralympics are the parallel Games to the Olympics and illustrates how the two movements exist side-by-side.

The  Paralympics, also known as the Games of the Paralympiad, is a periodic series of international multi-sports events involving a series of international contests for athletes with physical disabilities.

The Paralympics has grown from a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948 to become one of the largest international sporting events by the early 21st century.

Who are Eligible?

Given the wide variety of disabilities that para-athletes have, there are several categories in which the athletes compete. The allowable disabilities are broken down into ten eligible impairment types. The categories are – impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature hypertonia ( increased muscle tone, and lack of flexibility), ataxia (Impaired balance or coordination), athetosis  (movement dysfunction), vision impairment, and intellectual impairment.
