Slow the Aging Process with Ayurveda

Ayurveda addresses the problems of the human body in a holistic manner; aging being one of them. In Ayurvedic literature, aging has been termed as ‘jara’ or ‘vardhakya’. It is classified as one of the natural processes that every human being has to undergo. It is the process of decaying and it is manifested in the form of various degenerative changes both internally and externally. Everyone is well aware of the fact that a person who has taken birth must grow old and eventually die. According to Ayurveda the human body is a constituent of Vata, Pitta and Kapha in a balanced state. These three elements together are known as the Doshas or biological energy systems which are in charge of determining the longevity of cells in the body and hence aging. Any imbalances in the three elements, Vata, Pitta and Kapha will lead to diseases. Vata is regarded as one that governs all biological activity and is the energy-related to movement. Kapha helps in bringing about stability, lubrication and support to the physical body. It is responsible for the smooth functioning of all the body parts. Pitta is associated with governing metabolism, digestion, nutrition and regulating body temperature. A direct reflection of an imbalance in these three elements will lead to fast decay of cells which in turn will hasten the aging process in the human body. The vice- versa is also true that a good balance will enhance the health factor and in turn delay the overall aging process.

Ayurveda relies on comprehensive interventions in the diet, lifestyle, behavioral and psychological process to extend the healthspan and slow down the aging process. Anti-aging approaches would necessitate an ideal disease-free physiological state through a series of activities that help in maintaining the balance between the three elements of the human body; Kapha , Pitta and Vata.
